Trust the Mailman

I wrote a recent post that started with me observing a small group meeting at a local Starbucks.  I found myself around that same timeframe, in the same Starbucks, sitting at the counter along the street side windows.  A group of 3 walking by, stopped and started waving into Starbucks like they found a long-lost childhood friend.  Their faces lit up, pure happiness.  I turned to see someone in line or a barista they knew that maybe once made them the greatest latte ever foamed.  But nope.  It was the gentleman 4 chairs down from me in full USPS uniform.  I assumed the mail carrier for their office.  They excitedly pantomimed they'd see him later up in the building.  I immediately thought: "What type of World's Greatest Mailman must this guy be to get this reaction!?!"  As I thought about it for a little bit more, it was even better than that.

What kind of positivity and attitude must this guy bring to his job that he evoked that genuine display of excitement?  Lesson - you can ALWAYS control your attitude and day-to-day demeanor.  How you choose to go about your work and how you carry yourself is always in your hands.  Full on positivity and pleasantness can improve someone's day, it can lead to your happiness, it can make 3 relative strangers ecstatic to see you.

Learn from the Mailman

The most likely scenario that prompted this type of joy from a group of co-workers seeing their mailman is that this guy probably did his job with a similar level of joy.  I imagine, along with probably just being a really good person, he did a lot of the following:

  • Leading with a smile

When you greet someone, answer the phone, place a call - do it with a smile.  Lead with kindness and treat people the way you wish to be treated.  When you approach with respect, professionalism and patience your interactions will be more pleasant and effective.

  • Being as helpful as possible

Most jobs, at some point, will include a service component.  Whether it be assisting your manager or providing something to a customer, you'll be required to offer some kind of assistance.  Try to provide the most help you can in the most helpful way possible.

  • The meaning in the job you do is sometimes just doing the job well

Most jobs, at some point, will also include times and components that aren't very glamorous or fulfilling.  If you're struggling to find meaning in what you're doing, look to the quality of work that you produce.  Consider everything you do, every interaction you have with a boss, co-worker or customer, every seemingly meaningless task is a reflection on you.  Fair or unfair you will be judged by someone in one way or another for some aspect of everything you do.  You can take pride and find meaning in anything you do by trying to do the very best you can at all times.  It is a point of pride to always put your very best stamp on everything you do!
