Vos Tips: Small Steps = BIG Changes

Updated: Jan 5, 2021

Tip #1

As we mentioned in a previous email our fitness philosophy is a total and comprehensive approach to health.  It goes beyond just fitness and nutrition. We are so passionate and dedicated to a lifestyle and want nothing more than to help others find their own healthy lifestyles.  The core of the VOS belief is that a healthy life is a happy life. And health means being fit in body, mind and spirit.

There are nearly endless amounts of additional activities you can do to bolster your health routine.  Here are a few we love:

Therapeutic Massage: A deep-tissue or therapeutic massage with a licensed massage professional can be one of the best things you can do to relieve pain, move better and feel better.  A massage professional can work out tight spots in your muscles to improve muscle function and range of motion. This will leave you moving better and alleviate some of those nagging aches and pains.  A massage is also a chance to just stop for an hour or more. With our crazy schedules how often do you just stop and relax for 60 consecutive minutes? We bet not often. In addition to the benefits to your muscles, a massage is a chance to shut down and let your batteries recharge.

Yoga: There are so many kinds of yoga available - different disciplines, studio temperatures, with equipment, without equipment and all experience levels from first time beginners to ancient gurus.  They are all good and all worth giving a try. Yoga sessions can build strength and body awareness, can increase flexibility and improve your body’s ability to move through full and proper ranges of motion.  And as if that wasn’t enough, there’s a huge mental benefit as well. Stop me if you’ve read this before but there is a benefit to spending an hour disconnected from work and technology and just concentrating of how your body moves and how you feel.  This will help relieve stress and give you a mental boost.

Mindful Meditation:  Feeling anxious?  Stressed from work or family?  Have 1000 thoughts ping-ponging around in your head so you don’t feel like you have a restful minute?  Meditation can find you that minute. Literally. You can start meditating for just 1 minute at a time.  That minute becomes 2, then 5 and next thing you know you’re carving out 15-30 minutes at a time. Meditation allows you time to let go of your thoughts while you focus on your breath.  What Mindfulness Practices do is teach your brain to become less reactive to thoughts, situations, distractions and allow you to focus your attention and become more thoughtful in your actions and more importantly your interactions with others. Regular mindfulness practice will help combat stress and anxiety and can boost your physical performance and immune system.

Bonus Material – not quite ready for an in-person guided meditation?  Try one of these apps. It’s a great way to get introduced to mediation at your own speed and comfort level.
